YA action packed story

This is a fast-paced, action-packed book; but I could not seem to care much for the characters. It mixes science and magic styles together with an ascension theme. Hopefully the next book will be better since the characters have resolved themselves. The story does conclude with most of the questions answered, but there are more troubles coming in the next book.

I received this book as an ARC and wished to leave a review.

Its cool like if dbz was a novel

Its cool like if dbz was a novel. It has a lot of those scifi elements like energy and sorcery and magic and also space travel. I liked how stuff doesnt just happen on earth the guardians go to other worlds. I also really liked how time travel was used differently than other stories I read. You cant just go back and change something there were consequences for the guardian of time and how she could use her power. I also really liked how anyone can be a guardian unlike other hero stories where you are the chosen one or some alien with special powers for the sake of plot. What I didnt like was the political stuff tho. I think that was the weakest part and I didnt like how the writer demonized pot but the guardian of vice makes up for it, he was really funny. Other than that stuff it was really good.

Fun fast read!

Finished this in a few months ago, but it took me a while to write the review because I had a lot to say and I didn't want it to come off as negative or overly positive. So here it goes.

I read Dinah when it came out over a year ago and that book was hard to put down, but this one was much better. I finished it in a couple of days. Bruce's writing style really pops here and the action scenes were just brilliant. And the way he plants seeds then ties things together later on gives the story a lot of substance. The characters are relatable and dialogue is believable.

One of my favorite scenes is where Sei tries to fly to the moon for the first time as he's figuring out his powers and burns up on reentry. I really like how Bruce accounts for physics. Powers have consequences, things aren't just hand waved without reason. and it's really cool how he works science into how magical powers could work.

It isn't all rainbows and sunshine though. There are a few areas where I felt the pacing was weird. Like the story has a really solid, consistent feel right up until around Chapter 20 or so. I don't want to spoil it but it just felt different. Maybe rushed? I don't know. You'll have to read it. It just felt like Bruce was more focused on how the timing of certain events lined up around there rather than just letting those things be their own separate thing.

The one chapter I really didn't like was when the story tangents into Area 52. I felt this took away from the core action. And I spoke to Bruce and heard his side of it so I understand why this scene is there. And even though I agree with his logic, and yes removing that scene would cause all sorts of problems...I didn't like it.

Another thing is, like I said earlier the characters are believable and they're consistent to their personalities except for something that happens at the end. Again, I can't spoil it but I really hope he changes how that scene closes out in the final edit.

Lastly, this isn't really a bad thing I guess but it irks me book 2 isn't out yet.

Not for me

I like the overall concept but couldn't get past the third chapter. I just found the present tense style to be hard to read. It made the action sequences difficult to follow and sentences felt like interrogations. Maybe that's just a personal gripe, but combine all that with ok writing, I just had to put it down. That isn't to say it was all bad, just not for me.
